Great recipes but the quality of the book is awful. Within a few months the binding released the pages, so now many are loose.

There are many Doctors and others who have books out about cooking and nutrition. I find it all very, very confusing. Having been a Vegetarian for half my life, then a Pescatarian on a Keto path, I am always on the lookout for new recipes to keep me on a healthy eating path. I think in the confusing sea of primarily plant based doctors giving advise, Dr. Hyman is a breath of fresh air. He seems to walk a middle path on the subject, but stays true to what is the most healthy way to eat for most people. I am glad that he came out with a book that addresses a lower carb eating style, as this is very important. As someone (me) who has always eaten GOOD Carbs…but continued to gain weight, I did not know that what I was eating was making me fat, even though the other plant doctors were saying to eat lots of fruit, beans, rice, starchy veggies. This was not a good fit for me. In the past year, I lost 80 pounds eating Lower carb/Pescatarian….and love it. I do however wish Dr. Hyman would have included more vegetarian/Seafood recipes in this book…but I am sure the meat recipes will appeal to many! Thank you Doctor Hyman, for taking the middle path in all the crazy nutritional information out there. Bottom line is that not every diet/way of eating works for everyone, but the foods Dr. Hyman recommends are spot on.

If you are trying to eat cleaner, incorporate more vegetables and seeds, and avoid gluten, this is an excellent cookbook. I wasn’t familiar with Hyman’s other book, but I’m definitely going to be reading it. I’ve been managing diabetes with diet and exercise for more than a decade, and I have a feeling that the recipes here will add new spark to my menus.
I’ve tried three recipes so far, and all were relatively easy, if a bit time-consuming as far as measuring ingredients was concerned. The Flourless Protein Power Bread was easy to put together and made an excellent addition to my morning breakfast. (If you’re not dairy-free, it’s superb toasted and spread with a thin layer of cream cheese and a sprinkle of cinnamon.) It’s very hearty, and even a thin slice makes a filling snack. The Savory Seed Crackers were a gloriously sticky mess to make, but every baker occasionally enjoys mucking about in a pan of sticky goo. They were definitely worth the time and trouble, and I suspect these will become a staple in my house. As will be Blushing Beet Dip. It’s a beautiful, brilliant magenta colour and tastes mostly of sesame (because it’s got a good bit of tahini in it), and it’s a lovely accompaniment to the crackers. It was quite easy to make and very tasty.
The only drawback would be the number of unusual ingredients. I live in a large city, so access to raw nuts and seeds, miso paste, and other esoteric ingredients isn’t a challenge for me. But I can see it being an issue for someone in a less diverse location … though I suppose there’s always Amazon if you can’t find it locally.

I love Dr Mark Hyman and his passion for eating real food. This is an excellent follow up to his last book “Food – What the Heck Should I Eat?” , filled with really great recipes. Everything I have made so far has been fantastic. The book itself is gorgeous and I am happy to have a new repertoire of recipes to try out. Thanks Dr Mark!!

Muss man Prioritäten setzen.

I just received this cookbook and threw out a lot of what was in my kitchen. I don’t particularly like to cook anymore (I am a 70 yr old widow), but I also sent my son and his wife this book. She is a professional chef but I think they will both learn a great deal from this book. I know one thing for sure, the key to any foodstuff is to READ THE INGREDIENTS. I am not overweight but I have been through many traumas in my life, including losing my 2 youngest sons. Ergo, my cortisol levels due to trauma are high and I am going to check these recipes out to see if that helps me calm down. I wish I had read this cookbook when I was younger. While I have no health problems, except for PTSD caused by grief, I am curious as to how well the proper diet will help me cope each day. I like to eat simply, and I literally will eat an avocado straight out of the shell. I also realize that sugar is an addictive drug and how it sends me into a spiral if I eat it. I bought cashew butter the other day and threw it out later because it was made with palm oil. Again, READ THE INGREDIENTS. I will completely eliminate sugar and all processed grains and stick to mostly vegetables that I will cook along with eggs and use avocado oil. As I said, I like to eat simply so I will have no problem eating salmon with bones straight out of the can. I notice I don’t eat as much anyway as an older woman. I DO notice that if I eat sugar it sets me off and I feel horrible an hour later. I love the substitutes in this book and I will hit the grocery store tomorrow with a new list. This book says a lot about food being medicine, and I intend to use it. Thanks, Dr. Hyman.

I will be using this faithfully as my guide to eating clean. The recipes are very inviting, described clearly and approachable. I do have a concern that several of the ingredients (MCT oil?, Brazil nuts?… even almond flour?…) will be prohibitive for lower -income people & those residing in food deserts, thus the 4-star rating.

I preordered this book and was patiently waiting to received it. It does NOT disappoint. The recipes are varied and quite unique in that I don’t already have the same recipes in my other cook books, are full of a mix of healthy ingredients are aren’t difficult to find (for me anyway; in Singapore), look delicious and prep and cook times are extremely reasonable for most recipes (something very important to me) and often even quick. It also has some great options for kids which I’m happy about as I’m trying to get my toddler to eat a broader and more nutritious range of foods. I also love that this isn’t meat heavy as buying meat (especially the healthier types) can be expensive and it can be impractical for those on a budget. I’m really excited about this book. I love Dr. Hyman’s work and his ability to translate research and health advice into a clear and relatable manner. Definitely recommend this!
