Full disclosure I am a Ben Bikman super fan! I listen to a lot of his work. Somehow, he has managed to break down his scientific knowledge in such an understandable way that even this history major enjoys it!
This cookbook is a great complementary guide to go along with his original book “Why we get sick”. I like the intro chapters that boil down the science. I love how he offers different solutions, depending on your individual metabolic health. The book is also beautiful with great photographs and charts. From what I’ve tried of the recipes they are delicious (Creamy Garlic Shrimp, page 194 is amazing!). The recipes are simple enough to work for a novice cook but complex enough to pack a flavor punch! My one complaint is that there are lots of recipes that use artificial sweeteners like swerve but these can be easily adjusted if this is something you don’t want included in your diet. Also, I did find a recipe that included sesame oil, which was surprising as I thought that was on the list of seed oils to avoid. Overall, I really love this book.

Fantastically both content and quality . Easily can follow the guidelines and the writer is a knowledgeable neutral non affiliated scientist. Definitely advice everybody to buy it.

I am so happy I bought this book! I thought it would be just a cookbook. No! it’s the explanations of what and why plus the exercise program AND the recipes! The recipes aren’t all “fancy” where you’d never have the ingredients or that my kids would turn up their noses at. Super psyched to get going!

As a doctor, patients often expressed to me how confused they are about all the different health recommendations. Even many physician colleagues aren’t sure. Furthermore, patients state they never know where to start. Well if you’re wanting to reduce inflammation, reverse insulin resistance, improve your chronic diseases, or just want to improve your health in general, but don’t know where to start? Start here!
This book breaks everything down so simply that a beginner can understand the actual science of our bodies start making practical changes to their health. It even has sample workout plans, and recipes for whatever phase you’re at in life (reversing disease and inflammation, preventing it, maintaining where you’re at).
If you’ve made it this far, you might be wondering if this is an incentivized review. It is NOT. I’m simply a primary care doc that has been looking for a resource like this to point patients to for a long time.

Dr. Benjamin Bikman’s How Not to Get Sick is a game-changer. This book dives deep into the root causes of chronic illness, especially the role of insulin resistance, and explains how we can take back control of our health. It’s packed with eye-opening information that’s backed by science but written in a way that’s easy to understand for everyone.
What I love most about this book is how practical it is. Dr. Bikman doesn’t just explain why we get sick—he gives clear, actionable steps to avoid it. From dietary advice (think low-carb, nutrient-dense foods) to insights on fasting and exercise, every chapter offers tools you can start using right away. His emphasis on metabolic health as the foundation of wellness is incredibly empowering.
The tone of the book is optimistic and encouraging. Dr. Bikman doesn’t overwhelm you with negativity or scare tactics. Instead, he inspires hope, showing that small, consistent changes can make a huge difference in how we feel and function.
Whether you’re looking to improve your health, avoid chronic diseases, or just understand your body better, this book is for you. It’s packed with insights that make you rethink everything you thought you knew about nutrition and health. How Not to Get Sick is more than just a book—it’s a guide to a healthier, happier life. Highly recommend!

You don’t have to eat dirt all the time to eat healthier than the rest of the sheep.
I love Ben Bickmans utube course he is wonderful. The book could be of higher quality, but then the price just goes up. I have only tried a few recipes so far, and I often don’t follow to a tee as I’m an avid cook myself so for that reason I can’t give a rating but there’s some good info and meal ideas. This book is especially great for those just learning to bypass the heavy carbs and sugars and bad oils the SAD diet feeds us. It’s doable and it will change your life. Do it.

Our doctor suggested we listen to Ben Bikman online to see what we thought. Ben is a scientist and runs with the same ideas as Dr. Jason Fung. We decided to give it a try. We have been shocked at the positive outcome of following this diet. My husband’s blood sugar levels have been absolutely consistent and very much improved. This book comes with how and why it works, recipes to get you started. A second book, The Dirty, Lazy Keto Cookbook: Bend the Rules to Lose the Weight, was a great follow up!! So far so good.
