Nancy Woods –
In “Inner Excellence,” Jim Murphy delivers a profound exploration of personal development that transcends typical self-help literature. As someone who has completed the audiobook and plans to revisit it immediately, its impact is both immediate and lasting. The book’s core strength lies in its practical wisdom about mindfulness and present-moment awareness. Murphy doesn’t just theorize about being present; he demonstrates its transformative power through his personal journey and compelling case studies of others who have embraced his methodology.
One of the book’s most valuable contributions is its thorough examination of limiting beliefs and how they shape our experiences. Murphy provides insightful frameworks for identifying and overcoming these mental barriers, drawing from his extensive experience working with high-performers across various fields. The authenticity in his writing is evident as he weaves his own life experiences throughout the narrative, creating a genuine connection with readers.
What sets “Inner Excellence” apart is how Murphy has synthesized various success stories into actionable insights. The book doesn’t just tell you what worked for others; it guides you through understanding why these approaches work and how to adapt them to your life. His method, refined through years of practical application, offers a comprehensive approach to personal growth that feels both accessible and profound.
I found the audiobook format particularly enhances the experience, as the concepts about presence and mindfulness take on an immediate, practical dimension when absorbed through listening. Each chapter builds upon the previous ones, creating a cohesive framework for personal transformation that becomes more apparent with each revisit to the material. For anyone seeking to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and break through self-imposed limitations, “Inner Excellence” offers a thoughtful, well-structured path forward. Murphy’s blend of personal insight, practical methodology, and real-world examples creates a compelling guide that merits multiple readings to absorb its wisdom fully.

Inner Excellence is a must read for everyone that wants to increase performance and enjoy life at the same style. The mixture between strategies, tactics and stories grapped my intention untill the end. Especially the stories of Jim himself and the athletes he worked with is so inspiring. Can’t wait for next books to come from Jim Murphy.

With thanks to AJ Brown of the Eagles for bringing it to my attention, and author Jim Murphy for writing it.
There is a lot of information to consider in a few hundred pages, but Murphy walks you through the pitfalls of peak formance in the early chapters, building upon those lessons to lead you to ZOE – being your true self as you serve others and feel the fullness of life. And that’s just the first 50 or so pages. There are exercises to help you past mental blocks. There are stories and anecdotes that reinforce the lessons. This is a well-written book. Enjoy!

I read the first edition as well and this new revised edition is more enjoyable to read with updated content, great examples and quotes from world-class athletes and other inspirational people, as well as useful summaries at the end of each chapter.
The Presuppositions chapter promises us the Best Possible Life:
Most of us have been playing the wrong game our entire lives.
We’ve been focusing on short-term wins, temporary happiness,
and surface-level achievements, when we were created for so
much more. We’ve been playing a zero-sum, finite game, with
a winner and a loser, a beginning and an end, when it’s really an
infinite one. Life is meant to be a journey connecting with others,
growing together, discovering new and amazing things, rather
than a game of constant comparison and competition, always
trying to fit in or be successful. We’ve been setting our sights
too low, going for the low-hanging fruit on a single bush, when
entire orchards await.
Which game have you been playing?
The best possible life—absolute fullness of life—is one with
extraordinary experiences, deep, meaningful relationships, and,
most of all: love, joy and peace. These three “resources” lead to
an abundance of fruit that multiplies into so much more: peace
becomes patience, patience becomes kindness, then goodness,
faithfulness, gentleness, and, ultimately, self-control.
You will also learn about a new “BFF”:
If in the pursuit of the extraordinary, you devote your entire
life to learning and growing in love, wisdom, and courage, you’ll
find, I believe, that your heart will slowly transform to value
experience more than results. You’ll gain belief, focus and
freedom (BFF). Soon, fully experiencing the moment will move
up in priority over winning or the bottom line, which ironically,
will allow you to win more often.
The whole book is quotable – but I will leave you just one more to get the idea …
The best possible life—absolute fullness of life—is one where
we’re fully present the majority of the time. This life follows
a certain tempo. We can only function optimally when we live
according to rhythms of work and rest, relaxation and celebration.
To be our best we must walk by faith, not by sight, listen more
than we speak, and have strict boundaries around our energy and
routines. We need times of silence and times of celebration. Only
then can we be fully engaged heart, mind and body.
A magnum opus, Mr. Jim Murphy, congratulations on compiling a work that will be a game changer for many people!

One of the best books I have ever read on how to effectively change how you live and view your life, your work, your relationships, etc. It will make you realize that you have always reverted to the past and that predetermines how you handle things today and that we are too focused on what we will get from our work, our performance, our lives instead of just living for today.
We have zero guarantee about tomorrow and the past is past, this book will help you see a more fulfilling life of love, wisdom, and courage. Please read!

Inner Excellence is an easy read and full of great guidance. I try to ensure to put love on top of my interactions wherever I go, even work, which is unfortunately unpopular and hard for others to understand. This book gave me hope, clarity and tools to become a better leader and confirmation the life is all about love, wisdom and courage. Thank you Jim Murphy!
